Romeo and Juliet Essay
Writing a Romeo and Juliet essay provides an opportunity to reconsider the core elements of this famous play and get a new perspective on the events depicted. The process of working on a Romeo and Juliet essay also allows developing the basic skills of writing literature essays, which is an important element of oneââ¬â¢s education. Being able to distinguish the key themes of the literary work, a student achieves knowledge of thinking critically and becomes ready to face a large variety of daily challenges. Romeo and Juliet Essay The tragedy of the story depicted by William Shakespeare in his Romeo and Juliet has become one of the most famous concepts in the history of the world literature and is generally considered the greatest love story of all time. The romantic nature of love between Romeo and Juliet is one of the numerous subjects of this play, and they interrelate with the respective events. Each particular generation perceives themes illustrated by Shakespeare in its own way, depending on the relevance of these subjects in a specific epoch, and today readers usually focus on the motives of love, doubleness, and gender as the central ones in the play. Love Love is an integral thematic element of the play, and it is presented in many different forms. Therefore, Shakespeare speaks about sensual love, physical love, contractual love, and romantic love between Romeo and Juliet, which serves as a central component of the story. The entire story represents the ways in which the characters express their feelings and what particular role love plays in their lives. Eventually, the charactersââ¬â¢ feelings lead to specific consequences, which form the main part of the plot and explain the nature of their conduct. Doubleness The manner in which Shakespeare presents occurrences that the characters experience throughout the play demonstrates the doubleness of our world. One may notice this element presented in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s depiction of various objects and elements, which mainly includes the nature of symbols and the characters themselves. Even the aforementioned concept of love represents its dualistic nature and portrays its both positive and negative sides. This approach helps the reader to rethink his/her own perception of the phenomena described by the author. Gender Considering the themes of Romeo and Juliet from the modern perspective, it seems obvious that Shakespeare focuses readerââ¬â¢s attention of the subject of gender as well. Today, people may find several examples of stereotypical representation of masculinity, which partly still exists today. The actions performed by male characters, especially those of Romeo, are often criticized due to their insufficiency regarding the generally considered norms of masculine conduct. In conclusion, it is important to point out that the richness of the play written by Shakespeare allows the reader to consider his/her own view on the events depicted. Being defined as a central theme in this play, love, however, is not the only subject that Shakespeare tells the reader about, as the events depicted could be interpreted in several different ways. Lesson Plan Topics for any Content Area, Grades 7-12
While every school may haveà different requirements for the writing of lesson plans or how often they are to be submitted, there are common enough topics that can be organized on a template or guide for teachers for any content area. A template such as this could be used in conjunction with the explanationà How to Write Lesson Plans. Regardless of the form used, teachers should be sure to keep these two most important questions in mind as they craft a lesson plan: What do I want my students to know? (objective)How will I know students learned from this lesson? (assessment) The topics covered here in bold are thoseà topics usually required in lesson plan regardless of subject area. Class: the name of theà class or classes for which this lesson is intended. à Duration: Teachers should note the approximate time that this lesson will take to complete. There should be an explanation if this lesson will be extended over the courseà of several days. Materials Required: Teachers should list any handouts and technology equipment that is required. Use of a template like this may be helpful in planning to reserve any media equipment in advance that might be needed for the lesson. An alternative non-digital plan may be needed. Some schools may require a copy of handouts or worksheets to be attached the lesson plan template. Key Vocabulary: Teachers should develop a list of any new and unique terms that students need to understand for this lesson.à The title of Lesson/Description:à One sentence is usually enough, but a well- crafted title on a lesson plan can explain a lesson well enough so that even a brief description is unnecessary.à Objectives: The first of a the lessons two most important topics is the lessons objective: What is the reason or purpose for this lesson? What willà students know or be able to do at the conclusion of this lesson(s)? These questions drive aà lessons objective(s). Some schools focus on a teacher writing and placing the objective in view so that the students also understand what the purpose of the lesson will be. The objective(s) of a lesson defines the expectations for learning, and they give a hint on how that learning will be assessed. Standards: Here teachers should list any state and/or national standards that the lesson addresses. Some school districts require teachers to prioritize the standards. In other words, placing a focus on those standards which are directly addressed in the lesson as opposed to those standards which are supported by the lesson.à EL Modifications/Strategies: Here a teacherà may list any EL (English learners) or other student modifications as required. These modifications can be designed as specific to needs of students in a class. Because many of the strategies used with EL students or other special needs students are strategies that are good for all students, this may be a place to list all instructional strategies used to improveà student understanding for all learners (Tier 1 instruction). For example, there may be a presentation of new material inà multiple formats (visual, audio, physical)à or there may be multiple opportunities for increased student interaction through turn and talks or think, pair, shares. Lesson Introduction/Opening set: This portion of the lesson should give a rationale how this introduction will helpà students make connections with the rest of the lesson or unit that is being taught. An opening set should not be busy work, but rather be a planned activity that sets the tone for the lesson that follows. Step-by-Step Procedure: As the name implies, teachers should write down the steps in the sequence necessary to teach the lesson. This is a chance to think through each action necessary as a form of mental practice to better organize for the lesson. Teachersà should also note down any materials they will need for each step in order to be prepared.à Review/Possible Areas of Misconception:à Teachers can highlight terms and/or ideas theyà anticipate may cause confusion, words they will want to revisit with the students at the end of the lesson.à Homework:à Note any homework that will be assignedà to students to go with the lesson. This is only one method to assess student learning which can unreliable as a measurement Assessment:à Despite being the lone of the last topics on this template,à this is the most important part of planning anyà lesson. à In the past, informal homework was one measure; high stakes testing was another. à Authors and educatorsà Grant Wiggins and Jay McTigue à posed thisà in their seminal work Backward Design:à What will we [teachers] accept as evidence of student understanding and proficiency? They encouraged teachers to begin designing a lesson by starting at the end. Every lesson should include a means to answer the question How will I know students understand what was taught in a lesson? What will my students be able to do? à In order to determine the answer to these questions, it is important to plan in detail how you plan to measure or evaluate student learning both formally and informally.à For example, will the evidence of understanding be an informal exit slip with student short responses to a question or prompt at the end of a lesson? Researchers (Fisher Frey, 2004) suggested that exit slips can be generated for different purposes using differently worded prompts: Use an exit slipà with a prompt that records what was learned (Ex. Write one thing you learned today);Use anà exit slipà with a promptà that allows for future learning (Ex. Write one question you have about todays lesson);Use anà exit slipà with a promptà that helps to rate any the instructional strategies used strategies (EX: Was small group work helpful forà this lesson?) Similarly, teachers may choose to use a response poll or vote. A quick quiz may also provide important feedback. The traditional review of homework can also provide needed information to inform instruction.à Unfortunately, too many secondary teachers do not use assessment or evaluation on a lesson plan to its best use. They may rely on more formal methods of assessing student understanding, such as a test or paper. These methods may come too late in providing the immediate feedback to improve daily instruction. However, becauseà assessing student learning may happen at a later time, such as an end-of-the-unit exam, a lesson plan may provide a teacher the opportunity to create assessment questions for use later. Teachers can test a question in order to see how well students may do answering that question at a later date. This will ensure that you have covered all required material and given your students the best chance at success. Reflection/Evaluation: This is where a teacher may record the success of a lesson or make notes for future use.à If this is a lesson that will be given repeatedly during the day, reflection may be an area where a teacher may explain or note any adaptations on a lesson that has been given several times over the course of a day. What strategies were more successful than other? Whatà plans may be needed to adapt the lesson? This is the topic in a template where teachers could record any recommended changes in time, in materials, or in the methods used to assess student understanding. Recording this information can also be used as part of a schools evaluation process that asks teachers to be reflective in their practice.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents faced a lot of challenges when they attempt to secure our borders, they need to ensure that the borders are secure while at the same time not violating peoplesââ¬â¢ constitutional rights. Another challenge that CBP agents face is that with our open borders agreement of NAFTA with our neighboring countries of Mexico and Canada, it makes it impossible for agents to search every single person and vehicle crossing the border because it would disrupt the flow of commerce, which would have a huge negative impact in the economy of border towns and factories across the U.S. The functional equivalents of the border help U.S. Customs and Border Protection ensure that everything or anyone that leaves or enters the U.S. through another point of entry(POE) other than land border does it under the border legal regulations and laws established (Kim, 2009). However, despite not showing fear through his expressions you can see it in his hands- ââ¬Å"I noticed his hands, which rested on the sides of the chair, were working, rubbing, fidgeting, gripping and un-gripping in agitationâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Mr Jeromeââ¬â¢s hands continued to scrabble around like the paws of some struggling creature. â⬠o We later find out that he had lost his children and it had ââ¬Å"brokenâ⬠him. o Mr. Bentley o Mr Bentley is the boss of Kipps before, during and long after Kippsââ¬â¢ experiences at EMH. o He is seen in ââ¬Å"Christmas eveâ⬠and ââ¬Å"A London Particularâ⬠. Mr Bentley is there to prove that Kipps wasnââ¬â¢t the only one who was changed by TWIB and her story. He began, like Kipps, an arrogant power-hungry (ââ¬Å"Mr Bentley had never been able to resist making a good story betterâ⬠- ââ¬Å"A London Particularâ⬠) but fast forward time but go back in the novel to ââ¬Å"Christmas eveâ⬠and Mr Bentley s eems almost as affected as Kipps was. He is the complete opposite of what he was (ââ¬Å"He was an abstemious manâ⬠ââ¬Å"He had always blamed himselfâ⬠). o Mr Bentley represents the enormity of the WIBââ¬â¢s influence. The Landlord- The Land lord is a polite, hospitable man from Crithin Gifford- ââ¬Å"No intention to pry, Sir. â⬠o He reflects the attitude of all the people in CG, a ââ¬Å"If we donââ¬â¢t talk about it, it doesnââ¬â¢t existâ⬠attitude. o He knows everything about the people of CG and all their business, reflecting small community. o ââ¬Å"It was true that Mr. Daily and the Landlord seemed anything but sturdy menâ⬠- Although he tried to hide the secrets with a smile and lots of chatter, he was not to be seen as a fool, he was just trying to keep spirits high. o Page 42 shows the Landlordââ¬â¢s reaction to TWIB. Esme- o Esme is the older Kippsââ¬â¢ second wife. She is only briefly mentioned but we get the impression that Kip ps has found love and comfort in her. o She is, however, a little different from Kipps- ââ¬Å"Yet at times I had caught Esme looking at her wistfully, and she had more than once voiced, though gently and to me alone, a longing for Isobel to be a little less staid, a little more spiritual, even frivolousâ⬠o She also provides a background of normality and family to contrast with Kippââ¬â¢s story and make is seem yet more terrifying. o Kipps not having children with Esme may be because he is scared that they would have the same fate as his first born. Themes and Key ideas: Fear: o Fear is a key theme in ââ¬Å"The Woman in Blackâ⬠. o As a ghost story its purpose is to entertain and to frighten. You read "The Woman in Black" in category "Essay examples" o Susan Hill keeps the reader on edge through the rise and fall of tension. In the first chapter it begins quite calmly but when ghost stories are mentioned the tension builds, Kipps storms out leaving the Ainsley children, Esme and the reader confused. She uses this technique to catch out the reader. Just when she has fooled you into thinking everything will be okay something will happen, catching you off guard. An example of this is when Kipps is when he first sees EMH. He describes it as ââ¬Å"Romanticâ⬠and states that the ââ¬Å"June birds poured out their finest songsâ⬠before suddenly stating that ââ¬Å"the last light went from the sun and the wind rose in a gustâ⬠until finally ââ¬Å"I saw her again, the woman with the wasted face. â⬠o Susan Hill also creates fear through her use of un-explainable noises. ââ¬Å"The rumbling and creaking of the trap were comingâ⬠o ââ¬Å"I could hear it again, the odd, faint, rhythmic noise- bump bump, pause, bump bump, pause, bump bumpâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ o ââ¬Å"That maddeningly familiar bump that tantalized me because I still could not identify it. o ââ¬Å"In The Nurseryâ⬠is good to look at when discussing noises. The existence of evil/ the supernatural: o Hill makes us question the existence of evil/ the supernatural. o Kipps is a typical ghost story skeptic, he is arrogant and ignorant. He tries to hold onto his belief that ghost didnââ¬â¢t exist as he is established as ââ¬Å"A man of logicâ⬠ââ¬Å"I did not believe in ghosts, or at least I didnââ¬â¢t up until then. â⬠Power o Kipps describes there being a ââ¬Å"convictionâ⬠between him and Monks Piece the first time he sees it and that he felt ââ¬Å"seizedâ⬠by it. He has the same reaction in his first encounter with EMH, calls its ââ¬Å"romanticâ⬠and ââ¬Å"handsomeâ⬠o He keeps going back to EMH and says heââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"addictedâ⬠, EMH clearly has a power over him. o TWIB also has a power over him, he is terrified of her yet he still goes back to find out more about her. Revenge o Revenge is one of the central themes for ââ¬Å"The Woman in Blackâ⬠. o Jennet Humfrye was seeking revenge on her lost child by haunting her sister and then Kipps because he figured out her secret. TWIB takes her revenge on Kipps at the very end of the book where he is most oblivious ââ¬Å"could not have been less prepared for what was to comeâ⬠o Kipps realizes that Jennet was traumatized by the loss of her child but describes her actions as ââ¬Å"understandable too but not forgivableâ⬠. o The conspiracy of silence: o Used though out the novel, the conspiracy of silence frustrates Kipps as everyone around him keeps him in the dark. Although he doesnââ¬â¢t know it, theyââ¬â¢re doing it to protect him but he feels annoyed and angry at times about this game they are playing. There is an ââ¬Å"elephant in the roomâ⬠every where Kipps goes where he can tell that thereââ¬â¢s something theyââ¬â¢re all hiding from him and when they do tell him they only reveal information in dribs and drabs that Kipps canââ¬â¢t piece together. In the first chapter we get the impression the older Kipps now understands their reasoning behind not telling him as he too gives us, the reader, the same treatment. o ââ¬Å"Silenceâ⬠is used to describe nearly very characters reaction to Kipps telling then he saw TWIB. o Even Mr Bentley fel l ââ¬Å"silentâ⬠when Mr Kipps question him about Mrs Dââ¬â¢s family. The importance of place: o Monks Piece: o Monks piece could be a play on words from Monks (symbolising tranquillity and contentment) and Peace (symbolising peace). o He describes it as ââ¬Å"The happiest of homes. â⬠o Buildings have a power over him ââ¬Å"Seizedâ⬠ââ¬Å"Convictionâ⬠(theme of power) o Eel Marsh House: o Cut off from anywhere else, isolated, ââ¬Å"lonelyâ⬠. o Kipps is ââ¬Å"addictedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"fascinatedâ⬠by EMH. o ââ¬Å"This extra ordinary place was imprinting itââ¬â¢s self on my mind and deep into my imagination. â⬠o The vulture could be forewarning Kipps about the house. Kipps describes EMH as a ââ¬Å"light houseâ⬠something we use for guidance, reinforcing Kipps distorted perception of the house. o Nine Lives Causeway: o Forever changing, ââ¬Å"shifting mists. â⬠o The name ââ¬Å"Nine livesâ⬠comes from the saying that cats have 9 nine live suggesting dangers and death. o The way the causeway is cl ear and open at one moment and then foggy and boggy the next could be reflecting Hills use of rise and fall with the tension in the novel. o Kipps feels ââ¬Å"sucked inâ⬠, suggesting he feels helpless and lost. Maybe the fact he canââ¬â¢t see anything is reiterating his frustration with the whole situation.
